So, who are these freaks and what are they about?

It started many years ago with the infamous Stan Lee.  He created a new comic universe about people who genetically evolved, or in other words their genetic structure mutated, to give them extraordinary abilities.  The Mutations did no occur everywhere at once, and normal humans were scared that they would be disposed of and replaced by these people with powers to heal quickly, control the weather, or shot optic beams out of their eyes.

Having superhuman powers is cool and all, but once one gains the ability it can't be reversed. It becomes part of them.  Perhaps healing quickly can be considered a gift, until you think of the consequences of aging being thwarted and suddenly you find yourself not getting older and weaker and the people around you grow old and die.  You can now absorb thoughts, strength, and powers from others if you touch them - but doing so drains the life out of them and so you have to live your life without physically touching another human being. 

While some regret their abilities and suffer from what they feel is a loss of humanity, others embrace it. Thrive in it. And taking the hint from Darwin that evolution is upon them, they take it upon themselves to rise above the Homo sapiens and become Homo superior.  It is because of these wicked minded beings who show no mercy towards the weaker beings that Professor Charles Xavier called together a group of young mutants and helped them learn to control their powers.  Together Professor Xavier and his X-Men would help balance the odds and protect humanity, even while they themselves are hated and resented in the process.

To get the full tale of the X-Men, Marvel Comics has started re-releasing old comics together in book formats. The Essential X-Men is a good way to start catching up with the actual story lines.  The television shows and films however change the original mythos of the characters, so the information on this site will go according to the shows and films but not precisely the comics. While I know some comic knowledge, I was not an avid reader and therefore could not supply you with all the information regarding the original storylines.
